Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

Blessed Teresa is West Park Catholic Academy's patron saint.

Known better by her religious name "Mother Teresa", Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born 1910. In 1950, she founded a mission in India, to serve with compassion those in most dire need. That exemplary life gained her recognition, including a peace prize by Pope Paul VI, the Pacem in Terris award, and the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize among others, and honorary United States citizenship.

Mother Teresa's death in 1997 was heard around the world. Many called for her sainthood, a process which the Holy See normally scrutinizes over decades of time. They did expedite the process in her case. In 2003, Pope John Paul II beatifiedOff-site her (textOff-site, picturesOff-site), earning her the official title of "Blessed Teresa of Calcutta" in the Catholic Church. Beatification is one large step toward canonization as a saint. The Catholic church's next pope, Benedict XVI, cited Blessed Teresa's life example in his first encyclical, Deus Caritas EstOff-site (translated: "God is Love"), in 2005.
